What is a good way to save money and still be green and organic?

I'm very big on saving the earth; however, I'm a broke college student. Any ideas on household products or food that is "green"

Buy as much stuff as possible used at places like Goodwill. You will get great deals on clothing, books, appliances, etc and you are keeping useful items out of the landfill and putting local people to work. A win, win, win situation.

On that note, practice dumpster diving, especially the last week of school. If your college has a greek system hit the frat and sorority houses-these rich kids throw out some very high quality stuff.

Buy food at the farmers market and for even cheaper food offer to help a farmer out on occasion in exchange for food. I have done this with college students on my farm and they go away well fed (I will also fix them a meal) with a lot of produce to eat for the next week or so.

Buy in bulk and learn to can and freeze the excess for meals later on (If you are still transient this is not always workable but…).

Join a freecycle email group. people give away all sorts of usefull stuff. http://www.freecycle.org to fond groups in your area.

Use rags and cloth towels instead of napkins or paper towels. Far less waste and you will save about $100 a year not buying such things.

hang your clothes on a clothesline to dry

Reuse yogurt tubs/plastic food containers for food storage instead of buying plastic food storage containers. they work just as well, are free and keep plastic out of the landfill.

Turn down your thermostat in winter and avoid using AC in summer. This can cut your electric/gas bill in half

Walk or bike instead of driving. Good exercise, free to do and is non polluting.

Buy food in bulk when they are on sale.

Buy unprocessed food-dried beans instead of canned beans. Raw veggies instead of frozen or canned. Stay away from processed foods as much as possible. All are bad for you and very expensive.

Grow a garden start small and simple and eat what you grow.

Why don’t environmentalists tell people that they save money by living Green?

Why don’t Green people say that living green can be cheaper way of life rather than calling someone an idiot for ignoring or not believing in global warming?

That is one of my favorite points to make. I don’t argue about Global Warming, I have no idea if it what they say is true. I was green long before I heard the term.

When the 1st principal is reduce how can it not save money. You don’t have to go out and spend money on solar panels or live like a cave man to reduce the amount of energy you use. We have so many things in our home that use electricity with no benifit to use. Almost all electronics use standby energy, we have many things that have batteries that we charge 24/7 when they only need to charge once a week. I cut my electric bill by at least $50 a month by using a power cord with a switch to plug in my tv,vcr, stereo and game system. I also unplug chargers when they aren’t charging. No decline in lifestyle there.

I save money also be switching to durable reusable items instead of disposable one use items. I haven’t had to buy disposable plates for our bbq’s for years instead I have a selection of heavy duty plastic plates that will last for years.

I save money and reduce my exposure to questionable chemicals with natural cleaning products, it cost about 50 cents to make a bottle of window cleaner instead of paying over $3 for windex and I don’t have to worry about amonia damaging my lungs.

check out this article to save money easily: http://www.ehow.com/how_4547469_save-money-quick-easy.html
these are small changes to your everyday lifestyle that can add up to big savings. regarding investments, you didn’t say how old you are. if you have a little to put in a savings account, i always recommend online savings accounts because they have a higher interest rate than most bank ones. good luck!

What are some ways to save money when building a house?

I am building a house this year and would like to know some ways to savesave money. Does anyone have wholesalers numbers or anything like that? Even cutting out $10K would be benificial

I have built a few. There is no sure answer.

I get 3-5 estimates on everything, prices vary a lot.

You can get the 10k out of shopping for roofing, flooring and cabinets.

When you stucco have the stucco dyed, that way you don't have to pay for painting.

Can you really save money by unplugging electrical equipment?

Can you actually save a decent amount of money by unplugging things like cable boxes, microwaves, etc.?

I've taken to shutting things down when I leave for work, but there's really no way I'll be able to determine how much I'll save. If it's not significant enough I'd rather not bother - waiting for the cable to reboot is a pain!

We have two cable boxes with associated TVs and DVDs that get shut down along with our clean air machines. Is it worth it?

I wouldn't worry to much about cable boxes. I think when you turn them off at power button they go into a power saving mode.

As for other devices.

They have various gadgets out to help you with your problem! First I found is something called a green plug. Its suppose to help cut back power usage on stuff like refrigerators ect.

Another is a Kw/hr monitor it records the usage per item.

Check these out see if its something you willing to try out.

Both links are from Amazon but i'm sure you can look at places like radio shack or hardware stores.

How can I save gas and money while traveling across country?

I'm relocating from California to Texas this week (military) and I wanted to know if anyone has any good suggestions for saving money while traveling. I want to try and do what I can to save money and use my gas as efficiently as possible.

The best way to save gas on a long trip is to simply not drive so fast. I have a car that gives me the gas mileage on a display in the dash, and I can see the mileage go down as I drive faster. Sticking to the speed limit works out just fine.

Anything else would just be common sense. Eat fast food instead of at nicer restaurants. If you have to stop and spend the night somewhere, pick a decent hotel, but nothing too fancy. Etc. . .
