My family and I rarely go to the Philippines and this year my mother doesnt think we can go, what are some ways to save if the trip is around december 2008 and there are 5 adults. Any tips will help.

You don’t say where you’ll be flying from. I can recommend Oasis Hong Kong as a low cost airline which fly from Vancouver, Canada and from London, UK, to Hong Kong. From there you can get Cebu Pacific to Manila, Davao, or Cebu. The UK version you can do for around £400 per adult – which is often a saving of over £100 compared to a regular scheduled carrier like Gulf Air, or over £200 cheaper than the big names like Cathay Pacific or Singapore Airlines.

ALWAYS look on the airline’s own website – often they have deals which are better than any travel agent. Remember that travel agents have to make money, so they pass on the surcharge to you. But look on travel agent sites as well, such as Expedia, Travelocity, Cheapflights, Airline Network, etc.

I only use one side of each sheet of toilet paper. It may not seem like a lot of savings, but over years I have saved up a roll of cash. I am not rich, but I am pretty flush. I have a real handle on my economic future, even if the stock market should plunge. This idea might not bowl you over, but it does work. I have seen a lot of friends’ futures go down the toilet because they didn’t save.

Okay so I am on a tight budget, and I found myself low on energy, hungry, and losing weight. This is tough since I need energy to train in Jiu-Jitsu. Do you have a good grocery strategy for saving money but getting lots of protein and fruits and veggies? Meat kinda can be expensive. Thanks!

Participate in a CSA (community supported agriculture) program, if they exist in your area. You get a LOT of fruits and veggies from local farmers for not very much. You could also split your share with a friend or another family. Also, check out places like Costco- they have great produce for cheap (though you may need to share with someone, as it’s a lot to eat before it spoils). Frozen veggies can be high in nutritional content and are great when you can’t get fresh ones for cheaper. Try adding more eggs, tuna, and beans for cheaper sources of protein.

My bf and I are moving out soon. I need to save all extra money that isn’t for bills… How can I keep my self from spending it? What are some good tips for not spending money? I do bring my lunch to work, so there is no issue there. I mean, how do I get out of buying things or paying for things. I need to be poor poor for at least 5 months to save what we planned to save. HELP!

if you know you are going to want a soda at work with your byo lunch every day you work- buy a 6pk when you grocery shop – it’s way cheaper than $1.25-50 a pop from the machine.

same for coffee. make a thermos and byo instead of stopping at dnd or starbucks.

you can take the money that you would have spent on lunch, soda and coffee and transfer it from your bank acnt in to an ing savings account.

if you have cable with an expanded package- do you really watch all the channels on the expanded pkg or only a small few…. downgrade your package and transfer the savings in to the ing fund

do you have a cell phone package and never come close to that many minutes a month? downgrade your package and deposit the savings…

the little things add up. it’s amazing how much you can save by cutting down, but not out, the little things.

im hoping to go europe the cheap way- obviously its still gonna cost quite a bit, but im trying to figure out where i can save the money.

Eurail is not necessarily the cheapest way to go. It depends on how much travel you do, how far and where you go, and whether you stick to the slower regional trains or use the higher speed trains. It is often cheaper just to get point-to-point tickets directly from the national rail systems. This is particularly true if you have a travel plan and can buy tickets in advance in order to take advantage of available discounts.

With the Eurail pass, you can’t just hop on any train and go. Many of the higher speed trains require reservations or supplemental fees that you have to pay before you get on the train. Here in Italy, the fine can be another 40 euro on top of the supplement if you haven’t done this. There’s information on the supplements on the Eurail website at: http://www.eurail.com/1_reservations_supplements_domestic , http://www.eurail.com/1_reservations_supplements_international_trains , http://www.eurail.com/1_reservations_night_trains .

You need to plan an itinerary and determine what Eurail pass meets your needs. Then you would need to go to the various national train websites and look up schedules and prices. You can find the national train sites simply by searching for "train" and the name of the country you’re interested in – I’ve listed a few links below. Add any required supplements to the price of the Eurail pass and compare the overall cost to that of individual tickets. Note that there are discounts available for many individual tickets bought in advance. Here in Italy, the Amica fare provides a savings of up to 20% on the higher speed trains, but the tickets have to be bought at least one day in advance.

About 75% of the time when I’ve done calculations for people who had detailed travel plans, it turned out to be cheaper to get individual tickets.

One possibility for saving money is using the night trains for longer trips. You can sleep in a berth using the night to travel and not also have a hotel bill for that night. Again, there are often discounts available if you buy tickets in advance.
